5-day Couture Fashion & Beauty Workshop – June 2016

This 5-day fashion and beauty intensive is non-stop learning, shooting and growing experience. Lindsay will also uncover her secrets to essentials of imagery including concept building, gathering a creative team, creative studio lighting, posing, directing models, retouching and much more. There are NO other workshops that meet this caliber of image-making!

B&H Photo Video

A representative from B&H will be on hand to answer questions on gear, products and also will be bringing an assortment of products / lenses for attendees to try out.

You will work with top agency models, incredible hair stylists, makeup artists and wardrobe stylists, all while gaining valuable instruction from renown fashion photographer Lindsay Adler. You will learn everything from lighting and posing to retouching and post processing, with TONS of time to shoot.

This is a PORTFOLIO intensive, and at the end of the week the images you create will be unmatched. This workshop is perfect for someone interested in learning fashion lighting, retouching, posing, and for anyone wanting to take their portfolio up a notch. Furthermore, you will learn about breaking into the fashion industry and how to get published. We will spend time both in the studio and at a stunning location (TBA) to prepare you for couture image making in any environment! Lindsay will not only educate you and help prepare incredible shoots, but will also help you edit your images and provide critiques of you shoots.

This is an invaluable shooting, learning and portfolio-building experience in NYC!

Mon June 6th:  Introduction to Fashion Essentials  (shooting day) 

Description: Today we will start off the workshop with discussing considerations for putting together your very first fashion shoot. We will talk about gathering a creative team, considerations for successful imagery, as well as getting published. Next we’ll walk through the essentials of studio lighting, beauty posing, and other considerations. This day gets everyone set up for success throughout the week! At the end of the day you will have your first opportunity to work with, direct and photograph professional models.

9:00-9:30: Introductions!

9:30-11:30: Putting Together Your FIRST fashion Shoots

11:00-12:00: Introduction to ESSENTIAL fashion Lighting

12:00-12:30: Lunch in Studio

12:30-1:00: Beauty Posing Essentials and considerations

1:00-4:45: Beauty Photography Shoot

4:45-5:30: MACRO Beauty

Today’s challenges and directives:

  • Become familiar with essential fashion/beauty modifiers
  • Practice directing and interacting with model
  • Focus on model-camera connection
  • Understand considerations (camera angle, posing, lens choice) for beauty photography

Tues June 7th: Editorial fashion studio (shooting day) 

Description: The day begins with a demonstration and discussion of posing models for full-length shots. We will discuss camera angle, lens choice, directing a model, go-to poses and more. After this discussion, we get right back to shooting! Today we will continue with shooting fashion and beauty in the studio, as well as exploring creative lighting techniques. The day ends with an opportunity to experiment a bit more with the lights and try out your own ideas!

9:45-12:30: Fashion and Beauty Shoots in the Studio

12:30-1:30: Lunch in Studio

1:30-3:00: Fashion and Beauty Shoots Continued

3:00-4:15: Creative Lighting Techniques

4:15-5:30: You Light It!

Today’s challenges and directives:

  • Learn what to look for in full-length poses with models
  • Introduce model movement
  • Practice with a variety of fashion lighting setups
  • Explore unusual creative studio lighting techniques and modifiers

Wed June 8th: Fashion on Location (shooting day) 

Description: Today we will shoot in a stunning location and experiment with lighting techniques to tell our story. We will shoot natural light, strobe on location, and work to utilize the environment in our images for impact. We will also capture at least 1 cinemagraph (living image) and discuss considerations when creating a memorable moving image!

9am-10:30: Natural Light vs. Studio Strobe on Location

10:30-1:00: On-location shooting

1:00-2:00 Lunch

2:00-5:00 On-location shooting

Today’s challenges and directives:

  • Shoot a Cinemagraph
  • Identify, utilize and modify natural light on location
  • Try studio strobe on location to transform the mood of a scene
  • Tell a story with at least one image

Thurs June 9th: Retouching, critique, printing  (non-shooting day) 

Description: Today will we explore putting the finishing touches on our images. We will cover beauty retouching, creative retouching effects, and and discuss retouching workflow. This day also gives you the opportunity to have your portfolio or work shot during the week critiqued by Lindsay. Furthermore, representatives from Canon will be on hand to help you print your images on the incredible Canon Image PROGRAF series printers.

9:00-10:30: Optional culling images (come in and go through your shots!)

10:30-12:30: Beauty Retouching

12:30-1:30: Lunch

1:30-3:00: Creative retouching

3:00-4:00: Cinemagraphs

4:00-6:00: Printing your Work (Canon Image PROGRAF), Scheduled Portfolio Reviews

Today’s challenges and directives:

  • Retouch 1 beauty image
  • Edit 1 cinemagraph
  • Discuss portfolio or images 1-on-1 with Lindsay
  • Print at least 1 image on Canon’s PRO series of printers

Fri June 10th: Street of NYC  (shooting day) 

Description: Our final day provides you a bit more time to experiment and test out your knowledge from the week. You’ll have the opportunity to shoot around the studio in urban environments or even in the studio if you choose! Each attendee will have time to plan, setup and execute their own ideas with several different models. The day will end with a final wrap-up of the jam-packed week!

9:00: Split into groups for the day

9:00-10:00: Group scout locations around the studio (aim for under 10 min walk)

10:00-12:30: Shoot urban landscapes around studio

12:30-1:30: Lunch

1:30-5:30: Shoot urban landscapes around studio


Today’s challenges and directives:

  • Shoot 1 image from an unusual angle
  • Create 1 image with motion
  • Use knowledge/tools from the week to create your own unique image
  • Try Creative-In Camera Techniques



Refund Policy: Due to the cost of production, we cannot offer full refunds. In the event that you cannot make the workshop there will be a $500 cancellation fee. You may however transfer your ticket to a future workshop as credit or sell and transfer your ticket to someone else.
